The Modern Day Maverick

Why the Future Belongs to the Renaissance Man

For most of human history, being a “well-rounded man” was considered a virtue.

Then we built the modern economy.

Now we’re told to specialize.

Get a degree.

Pick a career.

Become really good at one thing.

Work for someone who needs that one thing.

Do it for forty years.

Retire.

Die.

Somewhere along the way, we forgot about the Renaissance Man.

The man who could think, fight, create, perform, build, sell, explore and understand the world around him.

Leonardo da Vinci wasn’t just a painter.

Benjamin Franklin wasn’t just a politician.

The great Renaissance ideal wasn’t about being mediocre at everything.

It was about becoming deeply capable across multiple dimensions of life.

And I think that idea needs to come back.

I call him the Modern-Day Maverick.

WHAT IS A MODERN-DAY MAVERICK?

A Modern-Day Maverick is a man who refuses to reduce himself to a single identity.

He’s not just a businessman.

He’s not just a fighter.

He’s not just an artist.

He’s not just a magician.

He’s not just an intellectual.

He’s not just an employee.

He’s a combination.

He develops multiple forms of competence and lets them reinforce one another.

He can walk into a business meeting and negotiate.

Walk into a bar and talk to strangers.

Walk onto a stage and command an audience.

Sit at a blackjack table and understand probability.

Walk into a gym and handle himself physically.

Sit alone and think deeply.

Pick up a camera and create something.

Build a website.

Write an advertisement.

Tell a story.

Make somebody laugh.

Travel somewhere he’s never been.

And when the environment changes, he adapts.

That’s the difference.

The Maverick doesn’t build his entire identity around one skill.

He builds an arsenal.

THE SEVEN DIMENSIONS

You don’t need to master everything.

But you should develop enough capability in several different dimensions that you become difficult to categorize—and difficult to replace.

1. MONEY — BECOME THE GAMBLER

Understand money.

Understand probability.

Understand risk.

Understand sales.

Understand marketing.

Understand leverage.

Learn how businesses actually make money.

Don’t just trade your time for dollars forever.

Build things.

Sell things.

Create intellectual property.

Develop valuable skills.

Learn to recognize opportunities.

The gambler doesn’t blindly bet.

He understands the odds.

That’s the difference between gambling and speculation.

Your goal isn’t to eliminate risk.

It’s to become better at calculating it.

2. MAGIC — BECOME THE PERFORMER

Magic taught me something that applies far beyond magic:

Attention is valuable.

If you can command attention, you can communicate.

If you can communicate, you can persuade.

If you can persuade, you can sell.

If you can entertain, people want you around.

Learn storytelling.

Learn humor.

Learn public speaking.

Learn presentation.

Learn body language.

Learn how to walk into a room and make people wonder:

“Who the hell is this guy?”

You don’t need to become a magician.

But you should understand the magician’s fundamental skill:

Creating an experience people remember.

In a world drowning in content, attention is one of the most valuable currencies you can possess.

3. BODY — BECOME THE WARRIOR

Your body is the physical foundation of everything else.

You don’t need to become a professional fighter.

You don’t need to become a bodybuilder.

You don’t need to live in the gym.

But you should be capable.

Learn to move.

Build strength.

Develop athleticism.

Learn how to fight.

Box.

Wrestle.

Grapple.

Learn how to remain calm when someone is trying to hurt you.

Physical competence changes your relationship with the world.

You carry yourself differently when you know you’re capable of handling yourself.

The goal isn’t violence.

The goal is capability.

4. SOCIAL — BECOME THE CHARMER

A brilliant man with no social skills is still limited by his inability to communicate.

Learn people.

Learn conversation.

Learn humor.

Learn empathy.

Learn persuasion.

Learn networking.

Learn how to read a room.

Learn when to speak.

Learn when to shut the fuck up.

Learn how to meet strangers.

Learn how to make people feel interesting.

Learn how to become interesting yourself.

And get out of your house.

Go places.

Talk to people.

Experience nightlife.

Travel.

Perform.

Take social risks.

You don’t develop charisma by reading about charisma.

You develop it by getting rejected, embarrassed, surprised, challenged and occasionally rewarded.

You need reps.

5. MIND — BECOME THE PHILOSOPHER

Don’t outsource your worldview.

Read.

Question.

Study history.

Study psychology.

Study science.

Study philosophy.

Study economics.

Study human behavior.

Learn opposing arguments.

Change your mind when evidence demands it.

Don’t believe something simply because everybody around you believes it.

The Maverick thinks for himself.

That doesn’t mean believing every conspiracy theory or rejecting everything mainstream.

It means something much harder:

Following the evidence wherever it leads.

Your mind is your operating system.

Upgrade it.

6. CREATION — BECOME THE ARTIST

Consumption is easy.

Creation is difficult.

Anyone can watch a movie.

Make one.

Anyone can listen to music.

Make some.

Anyone can criticize businesses.

Build one.

Anyone can scroll social media.

Publish something.

Write.

Film.

Edit.

Make music.

Build websites.

Create products.

Tell stories.

Start projects.

Your ideas become more valuable when you can turn them into reality.

Don’t just have opinions about the world.

Leave fingerprints on it.

7. ADVENTURE — BECOME THE MAVERICK

This one might be the most important.

Because you can become incredibly successful at building a life you don’t actually enjoy.

Adventure is the antidote.

Travel.

Go to Vegas.

Take the road trip.

Go somewhere you’ve never been.

Talk to the stranger.

Perform the show.

Take the business risk.

Try the ridiculous idea.

Fall in love.

Get your heart broken.

Laugh until your stomach hurts.

Experience failure.

Experience victory.

Collect stories.

Because eventually you’re going to realize something:

Life isn’t a spreadsheet.

You don’t get points for maximizing efficiency.

You’re here to experience the fucking thing.

THE SECRET: THESE SKILLS MULTIPLY

This is where the Renaissance Man becomes exponentially more powerful.

Imagine someone who knows:

Business + psychology.

Now he can sell.

Add:

Communication + entertainment.

Now he can build an audience.

Add:

Video + storytelling.

Now he can create media.

Add:

Magic + performance.

Now he has a unique entertainment vehicle.

Add:

Physical competence.

Now he carries himself differently.

Add:

Philosophy.

Now he has something to say.

Add:

Adventure.

Now he has experiences worth talking about.

The skills don’t simply add together.

They compound.

That’s the real power of becoming a Renaissance Man.

STOP ASKING “WHAT SHOULD I BE?”

Start asking:

“What should I be capable of?”

That’s a completely different question.

The first question forces you into an identity.

The second builds an arsenal.

You don’t have to choose between being an entrepreneur and an artist.

You can be both.

You don’t have to choose between being intellectual and physical.

You can develop both.

You don’t have to choose between making money and having adventures.

You can design a life around both.

You don’t need permission to become multidimensional.

THE MODERN WORLD REWARDS SPECIALISTS.

BUT IT REMEMBERS CHARACTERS.

There are millions of competent people.

There are fewer interesting people.

And there are very few people who become genuinely difficult to categorize.

That’s where the magic happens.

Think about the people you remember.

It’s rarely because they were merely competent at their job.

It’s because they had presence.

A story.

A philosophy.

A skill.

A style.

A personality.

A strange combination of abilities that nobody else quite possessed.

That’s the goal.

Not to become another interchangeable person with a résumé.

Become a character.

BUILD YOUR OWN MYTHOLOGY

This is where the Beau Magic philosophy gets wild…

Your life should eventually become a story.

Not fake.

Not manufactured.

Not some bullshit Instagram persona.

A real story.

You become the guy who…

Learned magic.

Learned to fight.

Built a businesses.

Lost money.

Made money.

Traveled.

Performed.

Created music.

Studied philosophy.

Took risks.

Got rejected.

Fell down.

Got back up.

And kept experimenting.

That’s a life.

And eventually people don’t just remember what you did.

They remember who you were.

THE BEAU MAGIC FORMULA

If I had to reduce the entire philosophy to one equation:

MIND + MONEY + BODY + SOCIAL + MAGIC + CREATION + ADVENTURE = THE MODERN MAVERICK

You don’t need perfection.

You need progression.

Pick one dimension.

Develop it.

Then another.

Then another.

Five years later, you’re not the same person.

Ten years later, you’re almost unrecognizable.

Not because you became someone else.

Because you finally developed the different parts of yourself that were sitting there the entire time.

YOUR LIFE IS THE ULTIMATE MULTI-CLASS CHARACTER

Think of yourself like a video-game character.

You don’t get infinite skill points.

You have limited time.

So choose carefully.

Maybe you’re a:

Level 8 Entrepreneur
Level 7 Performer
Level 6 Fighter
Level 8 Social Player
Level 9 Philosopher
Level 7 Creator
Level 10 Adventurer

Another guy might have completely different stats.

That’s fine.

There is no universal build.

You build your character.

That’s the point.

DON’T BECOME THE BEST EMPLOYEE.

BECOME THE MOST CAPABLE VERSION OF YOURSELF.

The goal isn’t to escape work.

The goal is to escape helplessness.

If one income stream disappears, you can create another.

If one career ends, you have other skills.

If you’re thrown into a new environment, you can adapt.

If nobody gives you an opportunity, you can create one.

If you’re alone in a strange city, you can meet people.

If someone challenges you physically, you can handle yourself.

If someone challenges you intellectually, you can think.

If there’s an audience, you can entertain them.

If there’s a problem, you can figure something out.

That’s freedom.

Not having no problems.

Having the capability to deal with whatever problems show up.

THE MAVERICK DOESN’T PLAY ONE GAME

This might be the ultimate lesson.

The world gives you games.

School.

Career.

Status.

Money.

Relationships.

Social media.

Politics.

Consumerism.

Everybody wants you to play their game.

The Maverick learns the rules.

Studies the board.

Understands probability.

Develops skills.

Then asks:

“Do I even want to play this game?”

And if the answer is no?

He builds another one.

That’s the Renaissance Man.

That’s the Modern-Day Maverick.

That’s Beau Magic.

Learn the game.

Master yourself.

Build your arsenal.

Create your own opportunities.

And then play the game on your own terms.
